GREEVASTI/GREEEVA PICHU
Greeva Vasti, a traditional Ayurvedic treatment for neck pain, involves bathing the neck in warm, medicated oil within a containment area. A ring of dough, typically made from black gram flour, is placed around the neck, creating a reservoir to hold the oil. The oil, selected based on the individual's condition, is then poured into the reservoir and retained for a specific duration.
The patient typically lies face down on a massage table, or sits in a comfortable position.
A ring of dough, made from black gram flour or whole wheat flour, is formed around the neck to create a reservoir for the oil.
Lukewarm, medicated oil (chosen based on the patient’s condition) is poured into the reservoir.
The oil is retained in the reservoir for a specific period, usually 30-45 minutes. During this time, the oil is maintained at a warm temperature.
After the retention period, the dough ring is removed, and the oil is gently massaged into the neck and shoulder area to promote absorption.
The patient is often advised to rest and avoid exposure to drafts.
The therapeutic action of Greeva Vasti is believed to depend on:
- Snehana (Oleation):
The oil nourishes the tissues and muscles in the neck.
- Swedana (Sudation):
The warmth of the oil promotes sweating, which helps to detoxify and release tension.
- Pharmacological action of the oil:
The selected medicated oil has specific properties that address the underlying cause of the pain.
- Increased blood circulation:
The warmth of the oil increases blood flow to the neck and shoulders, which helps to relieve pain and stiffness.
- Nourishment of tissues:
The oil nourishes the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues in the neck region.
